Day One…Take Two

Allow me to start over. I started this blog site in August and with dismay I got distracted by life and was not able to commit myself like I wanted to and like I felt my blog deserved. By life I mean work because my company was purchased by a new company. The amount of work has quadrupled and the amount of time I spent traveling the last four months and in training consumed and exhausted me. So I apologize to the few gracious followers I acquired and to myself. But, with my chin up, I am back. Ready to try this again. I have recently joined Net Galley and am excited by the opportunities before me.

For the past few years I have wanted nothing more than to become a full time reader and reviewer of books. I’m ready to take that next step right here, right now. I started my blog having no idea what I’m doing.  But I’m a quick learner.
So about me. I am a 42 year old mother of four children.  I have two boys, ages 20 and 18 and two girls, ages 9 and 11. I have been married twice which speaks to the age differences.

From a very young age I have always had a love of books.  Books helped me escape, took me to another time and place.  A place where I could imagine and dream.  In my early teens and twenties, I was mostly into horror and psychological thrillers.  Stephen King was one of my favorites as he was my mother’s as well and she had numerous books of his.  The Stand being my all time favorite along with Insomnia and Desperation.  Then as life would have it, my kids were my center and consumed my time, as they should.  I tried to paint, oil on canvas, for a few years but that too was very hard when I was raising two little boys as a single mom.  I love painting almost as much as I love reading.  Almost.

Today, as my children continue to grow and my free time comes in greater quantities, I have turned once again to reading and painting.  I will try to post some pictures of some of the paintings I have done.  Although I am my own worst critic.  I expanded my painting techniques to include acrylics as well as oil.  I love sunflowers and I love to paint sunflowers.  I am strongest there in oils.  I also love water and the ocean and enjoy painting those as well.

Reading, well that is my true love.  Today I ready anything I can get my hands on in the fantasy genre.  High fantasy, epic fantasy, dark fantasy, dragons, magic, Kings, queens, etc.  Favorite book?  The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss.  The Name of the Wind and the Wise Man’s Fear.  Anxiously and patiently (not really) waiting for Doors of Stone.  Hands down, I cannot explain my love of this story.  I have most of my books in Kindle format and typically only buy the book and put it on my shelf at home if I absolutely loved it.  Among my shelves are Brent Weeks’ Lightbringer series and the Night Angel Trilogy.  I have the great Anthony Ryan’s A Raven’s Shadow.  I am on the third book currently and loving it.  Review to come.  I have the Inheritance Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin, Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archives, The Legends of Drizzit by R.A. Salvatore, Chronicles of the Black Company by Glen Cook, Steven Erikson’s Malazan Empire and David Eddings The Belgariad, among others.  Sorry I can’t leave out Mark Lawrence and Peter Brett.  Starting to grow my interest in Romance but not the cheesy romance’s with the muscular man on the cover bending over the bared neck of a beautiful woman.  I want realistic, heart tugging, tear producing romance.  I don’t mind ugly crying.  Seriously…speaking of ugly crying I read the Clockwork Angel (Cassandra Clare) series and by the end of that last book…wow.  My review is on Goodreads.  I love a good mystery or psychological thriller (Shutter Island) and of course horror.  Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Peter Straub.  Historical fiction isn’t out of my reach.  The Book Thief among my favorite.  Ok, enough.  Give me it, I will read it.

I am going to post reviews of books I have read, even the not so good.  After all that is kind of the point in my starting this blog.  I am also on Goodreads and will have reviews there as well. Occasional reviews on Amazon.

What am I looking to accomplish?  I am looking to transition from a full time employee to a stay at home full time reader and reviewer. I realize there’s no money here but it’s more for my own personal satisfaction. I want publishers to send me ARC’s and I want to read and write reviews…all day long! I want a library in my home.  I want to sit here on my couch (or at my desk in my new library) and drink coffee, read, write and have my kitten on my lap.  Sounds great, right?

If there is any help, suggestions or feedback out there as I begin this journey feel free to leave a comment.

  1. Welcome to the blogging world! To review all day would be a dream and to be paid for it would be a dream come true. The best way to get noticed is to write lots and people will see your enthusiasm. There are always plenty of self published authors looking to get their books reviewed and you can always approach some publishers about review copies. I have had a few send me books at various times and met some brilliant authors. Just have passion and get networking, to date I have been in contact with an retired Norwegian ambassador and a lady who is a costume designer on films and TV. Blogging made it possible.

  3. Your ambitions promise an interesting future for your book review blog. I’m just starting out on my first blog too. In my latest post I mention Peter May’s latest book, ‘Coffin Road’ – not a review , more a referral and a recommendation. I look forward to your own future book reviews..
