Gilded Cage (Dark Gifts, #1)Gilded Cage by Vic  James

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received this ARC from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

This is the first book in the Dark Gifts series (trilogy?). I have to say, I was not disappointed. This is desribed in the Fantasy and Young Adult genre and I couldn’t agree more. Definitely geared towards young adults but you know, every once in awhile I actually enjoy the young adult books. They are quick, easy and refreshing. I gobbled down the Hunger Games when it first came out. The Gilded Cage was comparable to the Hunger Games. Not comparable in terms of the story. Comparable in the young adult theme and the fast paced engaging way it was written. Likeable characters, strange at times, dark, some magic (the Skill) and left me wanting to read the next book.

At times, I thought it was predictable but it didn’t take away from it. Predictable to myself but maybe not so much to the young adult. I found that the family, when they were split up, coped much better than I think I would have. They seemed to just accept the fact that their 17 year old son was going to some terrible slave camp for the next 10 years. There was also no communication allowed with him for the first three months. I was thrilled when he was returned to the estate to join his family.

Really I have no complaints. The book took off quick, kept it’s hold on me and finished with me wondering how long I have to wait for book two. I would definitely recommend this to both adults and young adult especially if you need a break from some of the longer more in depth books you may be reading. It was a fun read and I told my daughter she should read it.

Thank you NetGalley and to the Publisher, Del Rey Books, for giving me this opportunity! Thank you Vic James for writing a great story!

  1. I’ve seen this book around quite often, and I’m glad to hear that it wasn’t disappointing! It’s definitely nice and refreshing to jump into some young adult novels event if we’ve passed “that age”. Some of them have really amazing stories with fascinating ideas that are just worth checking out! 😀 Great review!
